Wednesday, Algerian authorities announced the arrest of 30 people on suspicion of their involvement in setting the forest fires in the country in August.
The fires left 90 people dead and destroyed tens of thousands of hectares of forests, APS reported.
APS reported that the Gendarmerie Nationale, the police force of Algeria, said that the investigations into the cause of the forest fires led to the arrest of 30 suspects, “who were brought before the authorities and placed in temporary detention” under investigation.
Among the arrested are seven members of the ‘movement for the self-determination of Kabylie (MAC),’ a movement the authorities classified in May as a terrorist organization.
The movement was previously accused of being involved in the forest fires but MAC rejected these accusations.
The fires broke out on Aug. 9,and included 387 fire spots across 14 states of the country, leaving 26 states affected by the fires.
