AFC Wimbledon v Accrington Stanley postponed as alternative ground not found after flood

AFC Wimbledon’s League Two match against Accrington Stanley has been postponed as the Dons have been unable to find an alternative ground to host the fixture after their Plough Lane home was damaged in flooding.

The pitch was damaged and buildings and concourse left underwater after heavy rainfall on Sunday night and Monday morning led the nearby River Wandle to burst its banks.

Wimbledon had already postponed Tuesday’s Carabao Cup third-round fixture against Newcastle United, which will now be played at St James’ Park a week later on Tuesday, 1 October.

This resulted in the Dons’ league game against Crewe Alexandra, due to take place that day, to also be postponed.

Managing director James Woodroof had told BBC Radio London the club was hoping to stage Saturday’s game against Accrington Stanley at another ground in south London.

But in a statement released on the club’s website, external on Wednesday, Wimbledon revealed this had not been possible.

“Despite significant efforts at AFC Wimbledon in the last 48 hours, it has not been possible to secure a viable alternative ground for Saturday,” the club said.

“With huge regret, the EFL have therefore postponed the match versus Accrington Stanley.

“Tickets will remain valid for the rearranged date, with more details to follow in due course.”
