James Bowen, the author of A Street Cat Named Bob, has said he could be homeless by Wednesday.

The 44-year-old shot to fame in 2016 when a film about his 2013 book of the same name was released.

A Street Cat Named Bob follows James and his beloved pet cat Bob who he found as a stray and credited with saving him from a heroin addiction was he was homeless.

Thanks to the success of the film and book, James was able to buy a ‘£500,000’ house, however, can no longer keep up with spiralling mortgage costs and insists he’ll ‘be homeless on August 9’.

Speaking to MailOnline this week, James – whose beloved cat Bob died in 2020 – explained: ‘I have had to sell my house, as the mortgage rates shot through the roof and I can’t afford to own this home anymore.’

The best-selling author added: ‘Problem is, I won’t get paid till after I have left the house empty and cleared.

‘I don’t even have the money for rent for a temporary place till I can find a new home, which means that myself, my four cats and Chewbie [James’ dog] will be homeless on the 9th as we wait for some money, after paying off the mortgage, to become available to us.’

He frankly added: ‘I can’t move my stuff into storage and I can’t move my personal belongings to even a friend’s house with nothing, I need to pay for at least a removal company to clear my home and enough for temporary storage.’

James also appealed for financial help, promising to repay anyone who can assist ‘as soon as he’s able to’.

James met Bob when he was working as a busker in Covent Garden in 2007. Finding a ginger cat in the hallway of his building two nights in a row, he checked he didn’t belong to other residents before taking him in while he continued to look for his owner.

Bob continued to follow James around before he took him in permanently.

Metro.co.uk has reached out to James for comment.
