Donald Trump endorses Hungary’s Viktor Orbán ahead of key elections

US President Donald Trump endorsed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in a post on Truth Social on Thursday, 6 February 2026, as the Hungarian leader faces a critical election on 12 April 2026. This endorsement is significant as Orbán’s grip on power may be challenged by Péter Magyar’s Tisza Party, which is currently leading in opinion polls.

Trump stated, “I proudly supported Viktor in the 2022 elections, and it is an honour to do so again,” referring to Orbán as a true friend and praising his stance on illegal migration.

Trump’s support for right-wing conservative leaders globally

This endorsement reflects Trump’s ongoing support for right-wing conservative leaders globally, having previously backed Japan’s Sanae Takaichi and Argentina’s Javier Milei, both of whom won their elections.

Orbán, in January, indicated that he was considering inviting Trump to Hungary ahead of the elections. He also mentioned plans for a potential Budapest summit involving the US, Russia, and Ukraine, expressing, “There is also a definite agreement that I made with the American president and the Russian president, which says that if there is progress and there is a peace summit, it will be in Budapest.”

According to the 21 Research Center, the Tisza Party currently leads with 35% of the vote compared to the governing Fidesz-KDNP coalition at 28%.
