Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur: Small boat migrant who stabbed man to death in Derby bank jailed | UK News

A small boat migrant who stabbed a man to death in a high street bank has been jailed for life, with a minimum term of 25 years.

Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur pleaded guilty to the murder of Gurvinder Singh Johal, 37, at Derby Crown Court in August.

The Somali national, 47, stabbed Mr Johal at random shortly after angrily complaining about his refused asylum application.

Mr Johal, who was known to friends as Danny, died after being stabbed inside Lloyds Bank in St Peter’s Street on 6 May this year. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cabdiraxmaan Nur, who paid 400euros (£352) to travel to the UK last year, was jailed at Derby Crown Court on Wednesday.

He was caught on multiple CCTV cameras attacking Mr Johal with a black-handled kitchen knife.

Derby Crown Court heard Nur had called charity Migrant Help less than two hours before the killing, saying he was “going to kill 500 people”, later suggesting he was going to target “doctors, police or people working at the Home Office”.

The 47-year-old had claimed asylum in October last year shortly after arriving in the UK, which was rejected by the Home Office because he had arrived “voluntarily” – a decision he later appealed.

Jailing Nur for life on Wednesday, Judge Shaun Smith KC told the defendant the murder was a “brutal and callous act”.

He added: “It was a real-life horror film for everyone connected to Mr Johal and everyone who had the misfortune of witnessing your wicked act.”
