Trinidad and Tobago calls new UK visa requirement ‘disproportionate move’

Trinidad and Tobago Calls UK’s New Visa Requirement ‘Disproportionate’

Trinidad and Tobago has expressed disappointment over the UK’s recent decision to impose visa requirements on tourists from the island, characterizing it as a disproportionate response to a rise in asylum claims. Previously, nationals enjoyed visa-free travel under the electronic travel authorization (ETA) system, but recent statistics show an alarming increase in asylum applications from Trinidad and Tobago, prompting this policy shift. Officials emphasized that the majority of travelers should not face penalties for the actions of a few.

The Trinidadian Minister for Foreign and Caricom Affairs, Dr. Amery Browne, criticized the UK’s measure as an overreaction, asserting that the number of individuals misusing the immigration system is small. The British High Commission in Trinidad confirmed the immediate implementation of this change, underscoring the continuity of the strong relationship between the two countries. Trinidadian opposition members noted the need for a revised approach to international relations in light of recent geopolitical dynamics.
