‘Trump’s call with Starmer’ & ‘UK facing torrential rain’

Monday’s UK newspapers cover a range of topics, from international diplomacy to domestic policy and poignant Holocaust Memorial Day reflections.

A handful of showbiz stories feature on the tabloid front pages, as does coverage of Tottenham’s manager Ange Postecoglou – after a shock Premier League loss has fans believing the Spurs boss is on his way out the door.

The back pages continue the Spurs coverage along with Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Fulham.

Online, many of the UK’s new sites report on the torrential rain and strong winds set to batter the UK over the next 48 hours.

    ‘Trump’s call with Starmer’

Several papers highlight Donald Trump’s recent call with PM Sir Keir Starmer.

‘Trump expected to visit Britain soon,’ says the Telegraph.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Trump is expected to visit Britain “soon” following their first conversation since the president’s inauguration. The paper says the prime minister became the first European leader to speak to the new US president since he was sworn in.

‘Phone call was warm and personable,’ notes The Times.

The Times describes the phone call as “warm and personable” but notes the prime minister is set to resist Trump’s push for the UK to increase defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2030, because of concerns about Britain’s public finances.

‘Trump accused of ethnic cleansing as he suggests Gazans should be resettled in Egypt and Jordan,’ says The Guardian.

The Guardian says Donald Trump has suggested Gazans should be relocated to Egypt and Jordan – a remark that has seen him accused of attempting to displace Gazans. The paper notes the proposals have been “rejected by US allies in the region” and criticised as “dangerous.”

    ‘Holocaust Memorial Day’

‘British survivor describes painful experience,’ says the Mirror.

The Daily Mirror highlights British survivor Mala Tribich, 94, who describes the “painful” experience of walking through Auschwitz’s gates, despite the trauma it brings.

“You don’t think you live in a world which does those things,” says one victim via the Express.

Similarly, The Daily Express features Susan Pollack, 94, who reflects on the horrors of the Holocaust, saying, “You don’t think you live in a world which does those things.”

‘Charles becomes first monarch to visit Auschwitz,’ notes the Daily Telegraph.

The Daily Telegraph reports that King Charles will become the first British monarch to visit Auschwitz, marking the 80th anniversary of its liberation. A source close to the King described the visit as a “deeply personal pilgrimage.”

    ‘Council tax bills could rise’

‘Council tax bills could soar up to 25%,’ says the Mail.

On the home front, The Daily Mail warns that council tax bills could soar by up to 25% in some of England’s most cash-strapped areas, affecting over four million people.

‘Patients to be treated at home to prevent winter armageddon,’ says the i.

Meanwhile, The i newspaper reveals plans to overhaul A&E care, with more patients being treated at home or locally to prevent another winter “Armageddon” in hospitals.

‘NCA shut down 8,000 social media accounts linked to people smuggling,’ reports Metro.

In crime news, Metro reports on a National Crime Agency operation that shut down 8,000 social media accounts linked to people smuggling. The crackdown is part of efforts to tackle small boat crossings in the English Channel.

‘Torrential rain and strong winds to batter Britain,’ says the Daily Star.

Finally, The Daily Star warns of more torrential rain and strong winds set to batter the UK over the next 48 hours. The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for a “whopping” 58 areas across the country.
