Meta to cut 5% of workforce in performance review shakeup
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is preparing to reduce its global workforce by approximately 5%, according to an internal memo from CEO Mark Zuckerberg.Â
The tech giant currently employs around 72,000 people worldwide. While the total number of employees affected could reach roughly 3,600, the company has not disclosed how the cuts will be distributed geographically. Employees in the United States are expected to receive notifications by February 10, while international staff will be informed at a later date.
Zuckerberg also stated that Meta intends to refill these positions in 2025, signalling that the cuts may be a temporary measure to streamline operations.
The announcement follows other high-profile changes at Meta, including decisions to discontinue the company’s fact-checking and diversity programs.
Performance-based job cuts are a standard practice in corporate America. At Meta, such reviews are typically conducted gradually over the course of a year. However, this year’s process is being expedited.
Impacted employees are expected to receive “generous severance” packages, according to the CEO.
