UnitedHealthcare CEO shooting: Luigi Mangione Indicted for Murder, Charged as ‘Act of Terrorism’
Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has been formally indicted by a Manhattan grand jury on murder charges that include allegations of terrorism.
Mangione, already facing murder charges for the 4 December shooting, now faces one count of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree murder. The new terror-related charge, unique under New York law, requires evidence of intent to:
– Intimidate or coerce the civilian population,
– Influence government policy through intimidation or coercion, or
– Affect government conduct through acts like murder or assassination.
Brian Thompson, 50, CEO of the nation’s largest medical insurer, was fatally shot while returning to his Manhattan hotel after hosting an investor conference. Mangione, 42, was arrested shortly after the incident at a McDonald’s in PeUnited Healthcare CEO shooting: Luigi Mangione Indicted for Murder, Charged as ‘Act of Terrorism’ nnsylvania.
When apprehended, Mangione was found with a ghost gun—an untraceable firearm assembled from separately purchased components—and a three-page handwritten document that police say outlined his motives and mindset.
Mangione remains held in a Pennsylvania jail without bail while awaiting trial. Prosecutors have not disclosed the full contents of the document but suggest it provides evidence of premeditation and intent to intimidate.
