Convictions at the court of Lucca for the death of Sofia Bernkopf, 12 years old from Parma, who died on 17 July 2019 in hospital following an accident in the swimming pool of the Texas bath in Marina di Pietrasanta four days earlier, on 13 July.

After eight people had been sent to trial, the court sentenced the pool supplier and installer to 4 years; at 3 years and 2 months the person in charge of the swimming pool and lifeguards. The lifeguard, 21 years old, on duty at the time of the events, was fully acquitted. Established provisional amounts of 840 thousand euros to be paid in the context of compensation for damages to civil parties. According to reconstructions, the 12-year-old went into cardiac arrest, perhaps getting caught on the water exchange side.

“It was like being helpless spectators of that tragedy again” 31 January 2024

After the sentence, Father Edoardo commented that “we wanted a sentence that was exemplary, but not out of malice but because I hope that the owners of plants and producers of such structures are more careful because they have the lives of so many people in their hands”.
