Three dead after migrant boat sinks in Channel
Three people have died after an overloaded migrant boat sank off the coast of Calais in the English Channel on Wednesday. French authorities have rescued 45 people, with search efforts ongoing.
The tragic incident follows the death of a baby last week during another attempted crossing. The rescue mission began after a life jacket was spotted at sea. Two unconscious survivors were later confirmed dead, while a third body was recovered by a ferry.
So far, 2024 has been the deadliest year for migrant crossings in the Channel, with at least 56 people losing their lives.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged tougher action to combat the smuggling gangs behind these dangerous journeys.
