Antisemitic incidents in the US surge to record levels, reports ADL

The US has seen a sharp rise in antisemitic incidents, reaching a record high following the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, according to a report by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). Between October 2023 and September 2024, over 10,000 incidents were recorded, marking a 200% increase compared to the previous year. This is the highest level since the ADL began tracking antisemitism in 1979.

The report highlights 8,015 cases of verbal or written harassment, 1,840 acts of vandalism, and 150 physical assaults. California, New York, New Jersey, and Florida saw the highest numbers. The surge comes as tensions in the Middle East continue to fuel violent rhetoric and demonstrations, with many antisemitic episodes reported during anti-Israel rallies.

The ADL expects the numbers to rise further as more data is collected, and a final report is set to be published in 2025. The increase in antisemitism coincides with rising anti-Muslim incidents, also reaching record highs in 2023.
