Even ‘the worst manager in Premier League history’ is destroying Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag and Manchester United have come in for more scathing criticism – this time from the man described as ‘the worst manager in the history of the Premier League’.

Sunday’s dismal defeat at home to Tottenham left ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford in considerable doubt.

While he will remain in charge for games against Porto and Aston Villa this week, he is in desperate need of a swift response to save his job.

The Dutchman has taken shots from all angles since Sunday with club legend Paul Scholes damming in is assessment, insisting his old side look like an ‘uncoached team’ under the former Ajax boss.

Ten Hag’s countryman Frank de Boer has also taken aim after they were ‘outclassed by Tottenham.

De Boer himself endured a rotten spell in the Premier League, taking over at Crystal Palace in 2017 following four consecutive Dutch title triumphs with Ajax.

His spell in south east London lasted just 77 days, losing his first four league games without scoring a goal.

The former Netherlands international was later labelled the worst in the league’s history by Jose Mourinho after he had the cheek to criticise the Portuguese’s handling of Marcus Rashford during his spell in charge at United in 2018.

But de Boer has become the latest figure in football to ridicule the under-fire ten Hag.

‘United look like a team that are wobbling everywhere,’ he told Viaplay. ‘They have been totally outclassed (by Tottenham) – and I am talking about being outclassed tactically, in quality, in effort and energy. Where weren’t they outclassed?

‘I was looking at the players – and one after the other they made such stupid mistakes. So many players are making poor passes.

‘I was trying to count the amount of big things that went wrong in the first 45 minutes and it was impossible to count those big mistakes on the fingers of two hands.

‘I am stunned by what I saw in Manchester. It became even more clear how bad United are when I looked at the way Tottenham played from the back, how they built things up, always finding a free player, showing guts on the ball and having the right power in a fight for the ball.

‘I found it remarkable how an opponent of United’s could play like that.’
