Hurricane Helene: At least 600 people missing and millions without power

More than 600 people are missing or unaccounted for across the US in the aftermath of the devastating Hurricane Helene, according to the White House.

Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida on Thursday, beginning as a category four hurricane and becoming the most powerful on record to hit Florida’s Big Bend before moving north into Georgia, the Carolinas and Tennessee.

Around 2 million people are without power, roads are blocked by debris, homes and businesses flattened and areas completely flooded. Officials are attempting to airlift emergency supplies, including food and water to certain areas where roads aren’t available to use.

Rescue efforts are being hampered by the extreme damage left behind.

So far, 116 people have been confirmed dead nationwide according to CBS and the death toll is expected to rise.
