Daily Express – Esther’s hope as key vote backs law change on assisted dying

    September 13, 2024

Dame Esther Rantzen’s bid to change the law on assisted dying has the backing of England’s first Citizens’ Jury, according to the Daily Express.

There is a report on Lucy Letby on the front page as the families of the victims express outrage at anyone questioning Letby’s guilt.

Dame Esther – we stand on the cusp of a right to die victory I never thought I’d see

Hopeful Dame Esther Rantzen says Britain now stands on the cusp of a remarkable right to die victory.

The terminally ill campaigner has been given fresh hope of a “good death” after Labour MP Jake Richards vowed to introduce a law legalising assisted dying.

It means the push to reform cruel laws now has traction in both the Commons and Lords.

Dame Esther, 84, who has stage 4 lung cancer, said: “We are on the threshold [it is] a moment I never thought I’d live long enough to see.

“It’s an urgent matter of life and death, and some of us are running out of time. All we are asking for is the right to choose, it’s our life, surely it’s time now to give us the choice.”

Family law barrister Mr Richards, who was elected as MP for Rother Valley in July, won a Private Members Bill ballot last week giving him a chance to bring forward legislation.

Dr Fiona McCrae worked at the Countess of Chester Hospital for several years until last November.

She spent much of her time, including when Letby carried out her sickening murder spree, working in anaesthetics before moving to different area from the hospital until 2018.

She said from 2004 onwards there was a very toxic culture of bullying that made staff scared to speak out in fear of their jobs.
