Ukraine could be given green light on long-range weapons use

President Joe Biden has signalled that Washington may lift restrictions on Ukraine’s use of US-supplied long-range missiles against Russia.

If approved, this move would address Ukraine’s ongoing requests to ease limits on US weapons, which officials argue have hindered their fight against Russia’s full-scale invasion.

While Russia has yet to respond, President Vladimir Putin previously warned that allowing such actions could lead to “very serious problems.”

Biden’s comments come as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy prepare to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. Blinken noted their goal is to “hear directly from the Ukrainian leadership” about their objectives and how the US and UK can best support them.

Blinken and Lammy are heading to Ukraine after holding talks in London, where Blinken accused Iran of supplying short-range ballistic missiles to Russia, saying they could be used against Ukraine in the coming weeks. Lammy called the move “a significant and dangerous escalation.”

These missiles are expected to bolster Russia’s capabilities, allowing it to target Ukrainian cities near the Russian border and areas under its control while continuing to launch longer-range strikes deeper into Ukraine. Iran, however, has consistently denied providing these weapons to Russia.
