Daily Mirror – They were told he could kill

    August 13, 2024

Three years before Valdo Calocane’s deadly rampage in Nottingham, a psychiatrist warned the mental health patient might kill, the Daily Mirror reports. The paper reports the victim’s “families’ anger and calls for a public inquiry”.

Also covered by the tabloid are the latest additions to Strictly Come Dancing’s 2024 line-up as Sam Quek, Nick Knowles and Paul Merson join the programme.

Warning Valdo Calocane might kill came three years before his Nottingham rampage

Three years before Nottingham killer Valdo Calocane’s deadly rampage a psychiatrist warned the mental health patient might kill.

Now the families of his victims say mental health workers must bear responsibility for their failures.

A report by the Care Quality Commission now published highlights a series of blunders by assessment teams that left Calocane free to roam the streets. Grieving relatives said clinicians involved in treating him before the killings “have blood on their hands”.

Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both 19, and Ian Coates, 65, were stabbed to death by Calocane in June last year. Paranoid schizophrenic Calocane had been repeatedly sectioned but discharged by mental health workers.

Strictly Come Dancing bombshell as three huge celebrity contestants unveiled

Strictly Come Dancing has announced the names of three more contestants joining the 2024 series.

DIY SOS star Nick Knowles, Olympic hockey player Sam Quek and former football legend Paul Merson have joined the likes of Tasha Ghouri, Pete Wicks, Toyah Willcox and JB Gill – to name a few – on the Strictly Come Dancing dancefloor this autumn. Although the last three names were only just announced on The One Show, two of the names were leaked when the stars were spotted at rehearsals.

Nick said he was the “least talented” member of his family, as his siblings have experience in the industry. When asked about the possibility of getting through to Blackpool, he said he was “going to go for it,” joking that he hoped he “wouldn’t roll another ankle.”

‘Blood on their hands’ report lays bare failings that left Calocane free to kill - Paper Talk

    Editorial 13 August 2024.

Tuesday’s front pages cover various domestic and international political stories as tensions across the Middle East and Europe continue to escalate. Many of the newspapers feature images of British diver Tom Daley – who announced his retirement just weeks after securing a silver medal at the Paris Olympics.

Elsewhere, many of the papers react to the report on the failings in the treatment of the Nottingham attacker, Valdo Calocane. The papers pick up on comments that a doctor had warned years earlier that Calocane could end up killing someone.
