France has voted to reject the far right in a blow to Marine Le Pen’s bid for power, The Independent reports. The shock results leave France in a state of stalemate as no party claimed a majority and it’s unclear how parliament will be able to pass legislation. Elsewhere, the front page features a large image of Emma Raducanu – the British tennis star – who crashed out of Wimbledon yesterday. There is also a report on Lewis Hamilton, who won the British Grand Prix.

France has voted to reject the far right, with a left wing coalition becoming the largest party in a hung parliament.
In a dramatic turnaround on Sunday night, Marine Le Pen was dealt a bitter blow as her far-right National Rally (RN) failed to capitalise on a strong performance in the first round of voting in late June, with tactical voting dropping the party into third place. It was the large gains that RN made in recent European parliamentary elections which spooked centrist president Emmanuel Macron into calling this snap parliamentary election.
Emma Raducanu out of Wimbledon after painful defeat to qualifier Lulu Sun
At least Emma Raducanu knew the feeling, of being the unknown, overlooked quantity and stepping onto the big stage to attack with merciless intent. But at Wimbledon, the strategy that won Raducanu the US Open as an 18-year-old qualifier has now been used against her.
As New Zealand player Lulu Sun thundered another crushing forehand winner past Raducanu on Centre Court, the world No 123 advanced to the quarter-finals having started the tournament in the first round of qualifying two weeks ago.

Rachel Reeves has said the new government has inherited the “worst set of circumstances since the Second World War” as she sets out a raft of housing reform in her first speech as chancellor.
Ms Reeves vowed to take “difficult decisions” on the economy in order to speed up infrastructure projects and unlock private investment – however admitted she had inherited little funds from the previous government.
