In a fiery statement, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, known for her stance on social justice issues, criticized Columbia University and the New York Police Department for their handling of anti-Israel protesters on campus.

The congresswoman accused the university and law enforcement of suppressing free speech and peaceful protest.

Anti-Israel protesters on campus are growing

The controversy began when a diverse group of students at Columbia University organized a demonstration in support of Palestine, calling for an end to Israeli occupation and genocide against Palestinians.

The protest quickly escalated, with some participants reportedly engaging in disruptive behavior provoked by Israeli agents working to disrupt the protest.

In response, the NYPD was called to the scene and several protesters were arrested. Ocasio-Cortez condemned the arrests as an attack on the First Amendment rights of the demonstrators, accusing the university and police of using excessive force.

NYPD have free hand to ‘do what it takes’

However, the NYPD defended their actions, stating that they were simply upholding the law and ensuring public safety.

In New York, a spokesperson for the department put forward a very ambiguous statement, that while they respect the right to protest, they will not tolerate any behavior that puts others at risk or disrupts the peace.

The NYPD are Universities are under extreme pressure from Israeli lobby groups who are doing there upmost to quash any protest. One anonymous Jewish American commented that ‘the NYPD have free license to do what they want and any legal bills will be paid by the lobbies.’

The clash between Ocasio-Cortez and law enforcement highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, both on college campuses and in the broader political sphere. As the debate over free speech and activism continues to intensify, it remains to be seen how this latest incident will impact the ongoing conversation.
