‘I am guilty,’ defiant Speaker insists he was protecting MPs when he bent rules and rescued Starmer from Gaza revolt

THE Commons Speaker has confessed to being “guilty” of botching yesterday’s debate on Gaza but insisted it was all in a daring effort to protect MPs.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle is facing growing calls to resign amid accusations he bent the rules to spare Sir Keir Starmer a backbench revolt over Gaza.

“I have a duty of care and I say that and if my mistake is looking after members, I am guilty. I am guilty because… I have a duty of care that I will carry out to protect people. It is the protection that led me to make a wrong decision.”

In a bid to defuse tensions, he also offered the Nats the chance of an emergency debate after they were unable to vote on their motion.

The night of chaos in Westminster ensued after Sir Lindsay went against convention by letting Labour table its own vote on a ceasefire in Gaza to avoid many of his MPs backing a separate SNP call.

More anger erupted after Labour admitted Sir Keir had met with the Speaker before the decision to accept his amendment.
