Africa Live: Zambia’s ex-President Lungu calls for early elections
Zambia’s ex-President Edgar Lungu is calling on citizens to push for an early election, blaming his successor, Hakainde Hichilema (HH), for economic mismanagement. Lungu also accuses Hichilema of mishandling the cholera outbreak that has claimed nearly 600 lives since last October.
Speaking at an opposition briefing, Lungu urged Zambians to pressure the president for an early election, stating it’s “imperative” if demanded by the people.
“If you Zambians demand that we call upon HH to resign and call for an early election, let’s go that route, but it should come from you,” Lungu said.
In response, government spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa dismissed Lungu’s claims, asking citizens to give Hichilema time to fulfill campaign promises. Mweetwa accused the former leader of damaging the country’s economy during his six-year term.
Lungu, who returned to politics last October, faces a challenge from the government after they withdrew his retirement benefits. Having retired in 2021 following a significant election loss, his comeback sets the stage for a competitive 2026 presidential race.
