Our Flag Means Death is cancelled after two seasons, which has left fans very disappointed.
David Jenkins, who created the Max comedy in 2022 based around pirates which starred Taika Waititi, was sad to tell loyal viewers that it was coming to an end.
‘The bad news is clear. OUR FLAG won’t be returning for a third season. We’ve sailed at the pleasure of the fine people at Max, and it brought them no joy to see this journey come to a premature end,’ he wrote on Instagram.
The news devastated his followers, with over 3000 comments which were mainly communicating sadness.
‘Like how did this happen?? I thought s2 did so well, how can this be true I’m so devastated,’ wrote user Ed and Steve.
Account Thunderbird Animates added: ‘Genuinely heartbroken, why does every show with great lgbtq rep always get cancelled :(.’

Actor Minnie Driver said she was ‘forever devoted to the heart of this show and what it literally and figuratively represented’.
‘An honor to have briefly sailed with everyone involved,’ she concluded.
The seasons’ end is particularly surprising to many due to the high praise from both audience and critics alike. On the review website, Rotten Tomatoes, it has a very impressive 94% score.

Despite the bad news of the cancellation, David was keen to also look at the positives of the situation – he was able to make the ‘authentically weird and heartfelt’ in the first place.
‘We’ve spent two seasons in a bizarre, beautifully-rendered world populated by some of the greatest actors and creatives working.
‘And the second season was made possible by the enthusiasm of one of the most likable fan communities in the history of this medium. Your voices made a difference, your art made a difference, your viewership made a difference in securing more OUR FLAG,’ David assured fans.
‘Getting to share this show with you and watching you make it yours has been a dream come true,’ he sweetly wrote.
It may be over in the traditional sense, but a passionate Instagram account, Like Lady Godiva had an idea, which has been liked over 4000 times.

‘Okay but can you film the third season on someone’s phone in a backyard with a kiddy pool as the ocean and put them in like a wagon for the boat so everyone can see what would’ve happened?’ they suggested.
The plot focuses on pampered aristocrat Stede Bonnet, played by Rhys Darby, who trades in his privileged life to become a pirate after a mid-life crisis, and chaos naturally ensues. The show set in the early 18th century is partially based on a true story.

The central storyline revolves around Taika’s Captain Blackbeard and Stede falling in love.
Taika described it as ‘a really special show’ and said in November it reached a ‘natural end’.
‘Just because I feel like, you know, they’ve been through so much and then wind up in that nice place at a happy ending,’ he explained to NME.
However, he suggested it could potentially continue without himself and Rhys.
A Max spokesperson confirmed the news: ‘While Max will not be moving forward with a third season of Our Flag Means Death, we are so proud of the joyous, hilarious, and heartfelt stories.’
Our Flag Means Death season one is available to watch on BBC iPlayer. Both series are available on Amazon.
