A ‘local hero’ has rescued a driver and his three-year-old passenger after their car got stranded in flood water.
Storm Henk has swept heavy rain and strong winds across the UK, causing major travel disruption, damage to buildings, and killing a woman who was hit by a fallen tree.
The driver and three-year-old child had to be rescued from flood water in the Hall Green area of Birmingham yesterday evening.
West Midlands Police said a ‘local hero’ entered the water to rescue both occupants of the vehicle, smashing a window to gain access to the vehicle.
The car was then tied to a bridge above, to make the rescue easier and prevent it from being washed away.
Authorities were also notified to make sure the bridge remained safe.
The rescue is yet more proof that it can be extremely dangerous to drive through flood water – as just 30cm of flowing water is strong enough to turn a car around.
