The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings as the New Year continues to see miserable weather.

Forecasters have warned of heavy rain across the midlands and the south of England which may lead to flooding.

Strong winds will also make the weather only worse, with power losses and travel disruption possible.

The bad weather has swept across the UK over the Christmas and New Year period.

But this did not stop revellers from having a good time last night, with many pictured taking cover under umbrellas, ponchos and raincoats.

Newcastle and Liverpool in particular were battered by torrential downpours, though it didn’t seem to deter those who were out for the night.

While a number of firework displays, including spectacular shows in Edinburgh and London, went off without a hitch, at least one event had to be cancelled due to the pouring rain and high winds.

Looking further ahead into 2024, there is low forecast confidence.

‘Through to mid-January, there is a signal for a shift in the pattern compared to the winter so far, with more settled and colder-than-average conditions becoming increasingly likely,’ said a Met Office spokesperson.

Many travellers returning from the Christmas break found travel plans thrown into chaos by Storm Gerrit which disrupted trains and ferries.

Storm Gerrit even created a ‘localised tornado’ as it passed over Greater Manchester on Wednesday, which damaged around 100 properties.

It came just a week after Storm Pia finally left the UK.
