Margaret Mbitu, a nurse from Whitman, Massachusetts, was found murdered in her car left in an airport parking garage in Boston.
A missing woman’s body was found in an airport parking garage in Boston, and police believe her killer has since boarded a flight to Kenya.
Margaret Mbitu, a 31-year-old woman from Whitman, Massachusetts, was reported missing by her family on Monday.
Mbitu worked as a nurse at BAMSI, a social services organization that operates group homes for adults with developmental disabilities.
She was last seen leaving a BAMSI home in Halifax, Massachusetts in her white Toyota Venza SUV.
Mbitu’s body was found on Wednesday evening around 6.30pm, the Massachusetts State Police said.
She was found in her SUV parked at the Central Parking Garage at Boston Logan International Airport. Evidence at the scene indicated she died by homicide.
Kevin Kangethe, a 40-year-old man from Lowell, Massachusetts was identified as the suspect. Authorities quickly determined he boarded a flight to Kenya before he could be taken into custody.
State Police are currently working with authorities in Kenya to locate Kangethe.
Few details have been released about the slaying. Investigators said Kangethe and Mbitu knew each other, and that the killing was ‘not a random act.’
According to an arrest warrant issued for Kangethe, Mbitu was found ‘unresponsive’ in her passenger seat.
Investigators observed a ‘large amount of blood’ in the vehicle. She had large slash wounds to her face and neck, as well as a puncture wound to her side.
Kangethe was seen leaving the same parking garage early on Tuesday morning. He entered the terminal and boarded a flight for Kenya.
Mbitu’s family has requested privacy at this time.
Her coworkers at BAMSI said they were ‘heartbroken’ over the news of her death.
‘She was warm, caring, and loved by everyone she worked with, both staff and the people she cared for in our group homes,’ the organization said. ‘As an agency, we are mourning the loss of such an amazing young woman.’
