A boy has been killed and another child has been rushed to hospital after a car crashed into them, police say.
Emergency services were called to Stock Road in Stock, Essex, just after 8.20am this morning to reports of a vehicle colliding with two children.
Despite their best efforts, the boy died at the scene.
The other child was taken to hospital for treatment, Essex Police said.
The road has been closed between School Lane and Honeypot Lane and will remain shut for some time while an investigation continues.
A man aged 23 has been arrested on suspicion causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.
Detective Inspector Mark Fraser, who is leading the investigation, said: ‘This is quite clearly an incredibly tragic incident which will be felt by many people across the area, not least the families of the two young victims.’
He urged people not to speculate about the circumstances of the incident, as he vowed the force would look into it ‘meticulously’.
‘I would also like to thank everyone who has already come forward to speak to us and would urge anyone who has information and not yet spoken to us to please come forward,’ DI Fraser added.
Anyone who has information, CCTV or dashcam footage is urged to get in touch with the police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111, quoting crime reference 218 of 3 November.
