Libya flooding: Fears of up to 20,000 dead after catastrophic Libya flood
There are fears that up to 20,000 people may have been killed in the devastating flooding in eastern Libya.
In the city of Derna – population around 100,000 – two dams collapsed due to the heavy rain, leading to a huge tsunami-like torrent sweeping through the city.
Entire neighbourhoods have disappeared with whole families washed away with tens of thousands displaced.
The flooding was triggered by Storm Daniel which hit the north African nation on Sunday and brought heavy rain.
International efforts have ramped up as crews have joined Liyan rescue teams in the Derna area.
Libya’s rival governments have requested international aid and are working with each other.
The mayor of the eastern Libya port city of Derna estimates between 18,000 and 20,000 people have died in flooding. His estimate was based on the number of districts completely destroyed when the two dams burst.
