Caleb has a proposition for Cain – but will he go for it? (Picture: ITV)
Caleb Milligan (William Ash) singlehandedly almost ruined Moira Barton (Natalie J. Robb)’s livelihood in Emmerdale when he sabotaged her meat business.
He needed to get her to sell some of her land as part of his campaign of revenge against Kim Tate (Claire King), but his plan was always to put things right financially with his Dingle family when his scheme was complete.
Because of Kim working out the plan, Caleb never got his long sought-after revenge. And with Cain (Jeff Hordley) and the rest of the family deeply suspicious of him, it wasn’t easy to make amends with them either.
Gradually he’s found himself building bridges with his family, and Moira and Cain have even accepted a loan from him, but Cain’s pride has meant that it hasn’t been easy for Caleb.
Recently he’s been sending work to Cain’s garage from the car business that he owns, though his involvement has been kept quiet.
Following a very nasty situation when Caleb found himself surrounded by henchmen of gangster Harry (Robert Beck) who’d been using Caleb’s business to move drugs, guns and all sorts of illegal stuff around the Dales, Caleb is looking for a quieter life in upcoming episodes.
What he really wants is to negotiate a truce between Cain and his son Nate (Jurell Carter), who’ve been at odds since Nate started working for the car company.
So he makes a proposal. He’ll make the driving firm a shared enterprise between him, Cain, Nate and Nicky (Lewis Cope). Nate is immediately keen, but as usual stubborn Cain takes a bit more convincing.
Caleb gets to drink from the Dingle welly (Picture: ITV)
Incredibly, though, it seems that Cain is finally thawing towards his brother and Caleb is formally introduced into the Dingle family by the traditional method – taking a drink from the welly.
The family gathering is a success, no fights break out and Cain and Caleb even offer to clean up together afterwards. Chas (Lucy Pargeter) wonders whether she’s wandered into an alternative universe by mistake.

As her brothers tackle the washing up together, it seems that all their former hostilities have been forgotten. Cain won’t give a firm answer about going into business with his brother and their sons, but he says he isn’t entirely ruling it out, either.
Things are still friendly the next day and Cain ropes Caleb into helping out at the garage.
As the sun beams down and little birdies fly through the treetops overhead, it’s a moment of rare peace and tranquillity for the Dingles. You have to wonder – how long will it last?
