Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s gore-fest film Kraven the Hunter isn’t what you think it is promises director

The director of Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s upcoming Marvel flick, Kraven the Hunter, has teased an unexpected element to the film.

J.C. Chandor is helming the movie, which follows Johnson as the buff anti-hero/supervillain (dealer’s choice) who was originally introduced as one of many of Spider-Man’s antagonists.

However, alongside the expected blood and gore of movie revolving around a big -game hunter character with beastly powers (there’s some throat ripping in the trailer), Chandor has now confirmed Kraven the Hunter leans more into deep territory, labelling it a ‘tragedy’.

Kraven the Hunter is set to focus on the titular character’s – real name Sergei Kravinoff – relationship with his gangster father (Russell Crowe).

It will also, as expected, serve as an origin story, set before Kraven’s first meeting with Spider-Man and as he acquires his powers.

‘Sony probably doesn’t want me to lead with this but the story is a tragedy,’ Chandor explained.

He added to Esquire: ‘When the final credits roll on this film, if you’ve been paying attention, you won’t have the feeling that this is all going to end great.’

The publication also suggests the story arc from J.M. DeMatteis’ comic book Kraven’s Last Hunt could play a significant part in this ‘tragedy’.

In the work, Kraven assumes Spider-Man’s identity (and suit) after faking the webslinger’s death before ultimately sparing his life in the climactic fight and later shooting himself dead.

‘The story is a tragedy’, according to its director (Picture: Sony/Marvel)

It is his grim demise that has influenced both Taylor-Johnson and Chandor’s approach to the movie and its material, the duo confirmed.

In the interview Taylor-Johnson also shared that he realised his costume was his ‘stomach and arms’ as he is depicted as a big and often shirtless character in the comic books – which the trailer has certainly focused on too.

The 33-year-old James Bond frontrunner, who played it coy when confronted with the rumours, trained heavily for months ahead of filming and at his ‘suppervillain peak’ weighed 200 pounds, having packed on the muscle.

He also learned how to run on all fours in order to convince as a hunter who uses animal qualities to successfully capture his prey.

It seems the motto of the gritty action-packed film is: ‘Villains aren’t born, they’re made.’

Ariana DeBose, Christopher Abbott, Alessandro Nivola and Fred Hechinger also star in the movie.

Kraven the Hunter is set to hit UK cinemas on October 6.
