Today’s news summary – Paper Talk

A number of Tuesday’s front pages report on asylum issues – especially the launch of a specialist task force to clamp down on lawyers helping migrants with false claims.

Many of the papers report on England’s last-16 win over Nigeria as they book their spot in the quarter-finals. The Lionesses beat Nigeria on penalties after clinging onto a goalless draw for 120 minutes – with one player being shown a red card.

    Asylum issues

The Daily Mail quotes Suella Braverman who says she wants to see the worst offenders in jail. The Times says ministers have warned rogue lawyers that they could face life in prison. The paper says the task force has been carrying out preliminary work for months. It could expand its scope to other “professional enablers”, such as doctors, accountants and employers.

The Daily Mirror calls the Tory asylum plans “clueless” – and says the policy has descended into chaos with the first boarding of just 15 migrants on the barge. The paper says dozens of people avoided being forced onto the vessel after layers intervened – a move that The Express says infuriated Tories.

Away from the government asylum plans, the Guardian leads on a study which suggests air pollution is linked to the global rise in antibiotic resistance. The study looks at data from more than 100 countries over two decades and it appears to show rising levels of air pollution are making resistance worse.

The Times reports the average wages are to start rising faster than inflation for the first time in more than a year. The paper reports economists predict a fall in inflation and a rise in earnings in new figures next week – and that wages could rise faster than goods and services until at least 2025.

The i newspaper reports that A-level results in England won’t be adjusted to take into account striking teachers.

    Lionesses through to last-8

England’s Lionesses made it to the Round of 8 after a tough game against Nigeria – which saw England held to a 0-0 draw for 120 minutes, before a dramatic shootout.

The Lionesses clawed their way into the last eight, says the Mail. Can they now roar into the semis, asks the Express. The Mirror says the dream is alive, whilst the i declares “Phew!”.
