Locals perplexed after four cars get stuck on beach at the same time

Residents had little sympathy for the drivers of four cars who managed to get stuck on a beach in Cornwall.

The vehicles had to be pulled to safety after they were driven down the cobbled ramp of Towan Beach in Newquay and onto the sand.

It’s thought they may have been looking for parking, and comes after a long line of similar incidents on the county’s beaches.

Although usually it’s just the one car – not a convoy of four.

Locals posting on a Newquay community Facebook group voiced their despair over the latest incident, with one suggesting people should be charged to have their vehicle rescued.

Steven O’Brien, from Barnsley, witnessed the whole thing, reports Cornwall Live.

He told the outlet: ‘I was walking down to the beach with my partner, two kids and my mum and saw this convoy of cars driving down the cobbled ramp to the beach thinking, “what the f*** are they doing?” and even said to someone, “I didn’t know cars were allowed onto the beach”.’

‘And then the lifeguards in the hut got on the speakers saying, “please leave the beach, you’re not allowed to drive onto the beach this isn’t a car park. Oh you’re stuck now”.’

Another witness, Kevin Harmer, said the lifeguards spent the next hour helping to push the cars back onto the road.

People watching from the promenade cheered and clapped after they were successful.

Writing on Facebook community group, Newest Newquay, resident Suzie Maclean wrote: ‘I don’t understand why people think it is acceptable to drive on a beach.’

Brogen Francis, meanwhile, added: ‘I don’t think we should help them. Let them figure it out themselves.’

And JJ Murrell said: ‘Charge them for the rescue it would still be cheaper than parking at Fistral.’

Just last week, on the same beach, someone managed to get their Mercedes SUV stuck in the sand overnight.

It was spotted by an early morning dog walker who shared a photo of the vehicle.

The picture shows someone has cheekily placed a ‘road narrows on left ahead’ triangle sign next to the car, which is reportedly owned by locals, not tourists.

In the summer of 2021 a van owner decided to park on Newquay Harbour Beach.

But the he didn’t realise that the tide was coming in and his van ended up flooded.

It comes just a week after another car was stuck on the same beach.
