Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag – more exciting than Skull And Bones (Picture: Ubisoft)
Ubisoft is alleged to be working on a remake of one of the most popular Assassin’s Creed games, by the same studio making Skull And Bones.
It’s hard to say what the most popular Assassin’s Creed is but if you’re talking about the old school ones, before they became role-playing games, most people’s choices are usually either 2 or 4. Number 4 being the pirate adventure Black Flag.
Black Flag was originally released in 2013 and although popular simply because of the pirate angle its ship combat was very influential on the series, variations of it being used in several subsequent games and forming the basis of the somehow-still-not-released Skull And Bones.
Remakes are all the rage nowadays, a trended started by Capcom and its Resident Evil games, but Black Flag was such a big game it’s going to be a major effort to remake it all to modern standards. Apparently, that is what Ubisoft’s working on though, except they’ve only just started and so it won’t be ready for ‘at least a few years.’
Supposedly Ubisoft Singapore is one of the studios working on the remake and they just so happen to also be the primary developer of… Skull And Bones.
The natural assumption is that they’ve just given up working on that cursed project and have instead switched to Black Flag, as something likely to be easier and quicker to complete. But apparently that’s not the case.
Kotaku claims it has two separate sources corroborating the Black Flag remake rumour but that it has also seen an internal email from the studio, in which management insist everyone from the Skull And Bones team have to now work from the office, rather than home, in order to get it finished.

Apparently, they’re providing free breakfast and dinner to soften the blow, which of course also implies that they’ll be expecting staff to stay later, in order to get more work down – to ensure the game is ready for its promised closed beta.
According to the same sources, some at the studio had already discussed pivoting Skull And Bones back towards a more co-op focused game similar to Black Flag, with more exploration and hand-to-hand combat.
That doesn’t seem to be what’s happening, but it may well have been the initial inspiration for the Black Flag remake.
