Noel Gallagher has been convicted of a driving offence despite never learning to drive.

The former Oasis star, 56, failed to answer who was behind the wheel of his chauffeur-driven Range Rover when it was caught speeding in west London last October.

The High Flying Birds frontman was prosecuted when police letters were not responded to, in a mix-up that was reportedly blamed on last Christmas’ postal strike.

Court documents obtained by the Evening Standard showed the car was clocked by a speed camera traveling at 41mph on a 30mph stretch of the A40 near Edgware Road station.

Gallagher pled guilty in writing to the offence in the driver’s absence yesterday at Willesden magistrates court and was issued with six penalty points on his license – despite not holding one as he has not learned to drive.

He was also given a £742 fine, and costs and fees totalling £396.

The music star’s driver Alan Neeson reportedly wrote to the court alongside the star’s guilty plea to explain the mix-up.

‘I am employed by Mr Noel Gallagher as his personal driver and also I am solely responsible for correspondence and other matters regarding vehicles,’ he said.

‘Even though the vehicle involved in said offence is registered to Mr Gallagher, [he] does not hold a driving license hence why I am sending this statement.

‘The initial offence charge sheet was never received and the final reminder was not received until mid-January. I believe the reason for this is, as well publicised, there was a postal strike before Christmas which I believe led to this delay.

‘This coupled with the Christmas post is the only logical explanation as to why these letters were received so late (sic).’

In a separate prosecution, Mr Neeson said he was the driver in the incident and accepted a fine and penalty points.

The musician famously tried to take driving lessons in the 1990s during the ‘height of Oasis mania’ with things not going to plan.

The lesson ended with him being snapped while driving the red Nissan Micra he was learning in after his driving instructor directed him to her house, where her mum was waiting to grab a picture of the star, he says.

Metro.co.uk has contacted representatives for Noel Gallagher for comment.
