Games Inbox: PS5 winning the current generation, the last Advance Wars, and Mandalorian Season 3 finale

Has it won already? (pic: Sony)

The Thursday letters page wishes that Konami and Hideo Kojima would patch things up, as one reader has a solution to Xbox custom music.

    The untouchable
Seeing the stories about how well the PlayStation 5 is selling I think it’s pretty obvious that it’s unstoppable this generation, that it’s already ‘won.’ Apparently it’s now tracking above the PlayStation 4 too, which could even make it one of the most successful consoles ever.

I don’t see any way that Microsoft catches up, let along takes over. Not unless Fable or whatever suddenly becomes the next The Last Of Us, and even then I don’t really see it. Which means another generation in which the Xbox comes dead last. That’s three in a row now.

This isn’t me crowing about it but rather me beginning to see Microsoft’s point of view in terms of buying Activision Blizzard. They need to do something drastic in order to make a breakthrough and while I don’t think this is it, I can see why they might’ve thought it was.

I own a PlayStation 5 but I don’t want Sony to have no competition, they’re already acting weird enough at the moment without starting to think of themselves as even more untouchable.

    Final fling
Loved your review of Advance Wars, GC. It’s always been one of my favourites and I’m very glad to see it back. I doubt it’ll sell that well though and probably this will be the last one. I can imagine that Nintendo probably made that decision when they first delayed it, since this sort of thing always seems to happen to the game, where some kind of real world event happens and Nintendo think it’s too insensitive to release.

Oh well, at least the remakes are good and everything can go out on a high. I am a bit gutted about the online though, I have to admit, as that seems a real wasted opportunity. I can’t even imagine what problem Nintendo think they’re avoiding with it. It’s not like they would’ve allowed voice or text chat so what’s the issue?

    Strange logic
So, these Switch 2 rumours appear to be gathering more momentum and, as GC has highlighted, the Switch is over six years old now. But surely Nintendo wouldn’t want to announce it later this year with a release date of, say, spring 2024, as that would harm Xmas sales?

I know that if I was contemplating getting a Switch and discovered the upgrade was being released within three or four months, I’d hold off. Isn’t it still selling rather well considering the age of the console? It’s not like the Switch reveal, where the Wii U was sat on shelves being largely ignored by consumers.

Maybe they’ll reveal it in October/November alongside a price cut on Switch models, which will see them through that Christmas season? Though, that isn’t the kind of thing Nintendo tend to do. I suppose the company isn’t exactly hard up considering the success of the Mario film. Maybe I’m just over thinking this?
    Matt

GC: What you say is perfectly sensible. An announcement a few months into 2024 seems the most logical. But not only is Nintendo often not logical but many rumours are insisting that it may actually be released this year; more than claim a 2024 launch in fact, which seems unlikely and yet… who can say?

In reply to Hudson, how can PlayStation 5 be the best choice of console?!

The Xbox has a more powerful CPU and GPU, more backward compatible games, is cheaper and smaller than PlayStation 5 and has Game Pass. Let’s not forget with Microsoft Rewards you can earn enough points to have Game Pass free, I’ve not spent a single penny for my Game Pass in two years!

OK, PlayStation 5 has a better controller and a faster SSD but that’s all it has going for it. About time PlayStation people woke up to the facts!

GC: You didn’t mention anything about either console’s… games?

    Deep clean
I’ve recently discovered I can download Ghosts Of Tsushima Director’s Cut as part of the PS Plus package, enabling me to play the DLC.

Unfortunately, I seem to have deleted my save data from when I previously completed the game. Including cloud data.

Is there anyway of accessing the DLC from a new game or downloading someone else’s save data from a completed walkthrough so I can access the DLC without completing the game again?

    Any help appreciated.
    John

GC: We’re not sure, but perhaps a reader can help. How did you manage to delete it so thoroughly?

    Going home
Over the weekend there was another rumour about a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3. It wasn’t true, just a false alarm, but it got everyone talking anyway. Which makes me wonder: why don’t Konami make the game? Time and again they get the proof that people are interested but they never go through with it and make a remake. And yet somehow they do with Silent Hill 2?

I assume it’s because they think fans would revolt if Hideo Kojima wasn’t involved but would they, really? Ordinary people certainly wouldn’t care and I think that if they just stuck to a straight remake, without trying to change anything, most people would be happy with that.

Or… they could try and patch things up with Kojima? All he needs to do is give the remake his blessing and most of the fans would be placated. He doesn’t even need to work on it. Or Konami could offer to publish some of his new games. His developer is independent so he could go through anyone and I know I’d like to see him back under the Konami label.

    Background music
In response to the letters regarding custom soundtracks on Xbox. It is technically still sort of possible: download the TuneIn Radio app, or Spotify etc. on your Xbox and you can set it to play and then enter a game and it will be playing in the background.

Here is the link for further information. I did the research after launching my own internet radio station last year. Hope this helps!

So I just watched the finale of The Mandalorian Season 3 and while it had some fun action the season as a whole is such a massive step down from the first two I can’t believe the same people were involved. Almost nothing that happens make any kind of sense, to the point where they keep inventing little details that weren’t necessary and whose only point seems to be to make stuff seem even stupider (I’m trying to avoid spoilers but, really, I could be talking about anything).

Which brings me to what we all assume to be the inevitable game, even though one hasn’t been announced. A lot of people think that’s what the Ubisoft one is but I really hope it’s just bounty hunter themed and not literally a Mandalorian tie-in as the thought of having to drag out all these stupid plot lines into a game does not sound appealing at all.

It should just be a completely open ended game where you pick what kind of bounty hunter you want to be and just go out and try to make money anyway you can. That to me would be much more interesting than recreating scenes from the show or whatever.

You can have Mando appear if you want, maybe be a quest giver occasionally, but I wouldn’t want to see anything more. The game should be its own thing and, hopefully, have a better script than the show.

I wasn’t sure why I was so excited to see Street Fighter 2: Special Champion Edition added to the Mega Drive line-up on the Switch online until I played it and it confirmed that that SNES version was superior in every way. Console wars 4 life!

I’m not going to lie, those Lego Sonic sets look pretty sweet. Very interested to see what the rumoured Zelda set looks like too. I’m surprised it wasn’t timed to come out at the same time as Tears Of The Kingdom.

    This week’s Hot Topic
The subject for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Roland, who asks if you could reboot any series what would it be?

What franchise are you currently unhappy with and what would you do to fix it? It could be a soft reboot, which keeps the the same continuity but focuses on new characters and gameplay or a hard reboot that doesn’t necessarily keep anything from the previous games.

What are your main issues with the franchise at the moment and why is an ordinary sequel unlikely to fix them? Do you think the reboot could’ve been avoided if changes were made earlier or do all series need them from time to time?
