There are suddenly a lot of films to watch (Picture: AP/20th Century Studios)
It’s nearly time for the 95th Academy Awards – better known as the Oscars.
The annual film ceremony is the grand finale of the traditional awards show season, and will take place on Sunday, March 12 live from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California.
The nominations were announced in January this year.
Nominations for best actor in a leading role have provided an extra thrill this year, as all those nominated have never won an Oscar, or even been shortlisted until now.
Delighted by their nominations for best actor are Austin Butler for his dedicated performance as Elvis Presley in the recent biopic, Colin Farrell for The Banshees of Inisherin, The Whale’s Brendan Fraser, the legend that is Bill Nighy for Living, and last but not least, a very emotional Paul Mescal, for his touching ode to fatherhood in Aftersun.
As for best actress, Cate Blanchett is up for her gritty performance in Tár, Ana de Armas for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in Blonde, Michelle Williams for The Fabelmans, Everything Everywhere All at Once’s Michelle Yeoh, and in a nod to some serious campaigning by Kate Winslet and the like, Andrea Riseborough for her role in low-budget indie film To Leslie.
In the best original song category, Rihanna and Lady Gaga are both hoping to win big as their two tracks – Rihanna’s Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s soundtrack, and Lady Gaga’s Top Gun: Maverick hit Hold My Hand – compete for the accolade.
Snubbed from the list is Taylor Swift’s song Carolina, which appeared in Where the Crawdads Sing.
How to watch the 2023 Best Picture Oscar nominees in the UK
Nominations include war epic All Quiet on the Western Front, the hotly-anticipated Avatar: The Way of Water, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Fabelmans, Tár, Top Gun: Maverick, Triangle of Sadness and Women Talking.
Here is there to watch them:
All Quiet on the Western Front

Directed by Edward Berger, All Quiet on the Western Front is the German anti-war film that’s creating quite the buzz, as it was nominated for nine awards at this year’s Oscars.

Avatar: The Way of Water

A whole 14 years after our first installment of Avatar, this sequel has been much-anticipated, and clearly the Oscars seem to think our wait hasn’t been in vain. The film is currently showing in cinemas.
Avatar: The Way of Water will be available to stream on Disney Plus, although no date has been given yet.
The Banshees of Inisherin
Colin Farrell is nominated in the best actor category for his performance in The Banshees of Inisherin (Picture: AP)
Playwright Martin McDonagh’s darkly comic The Banshees of Inisherin is certainly one to watch, as it took home three major prizes at the Golden Globes earlier this month.
The Banshees of Inisherin is available to stream at home on Disney Plus.
Elvis
Austin Butler puts on quite the performance in his portrayal of Elvis in the energetic biopic (Picture: AP)
One to watch for anyone nostalgic for the 1960s’ answer to rock and roll, Austin Butler stuns as The King in his recent biopic, Elvis.
Elvis’ only child Lisa Marie Presley died only days after cheering Austin on at the Golden Globes for his efforts.
Elvis is available to stream on NOW and Sky Go. It can also be downloaded on Amazon Prime.
Everything Everywhere All at Once
Stephanie Hsu, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan star in Everything Everywhere All at Once (Picture: AP)
We know you want to watch, well, everything from the Oscars nomination list all at once, but if there’s one you really should watch it is the film Everything Everywhere All at Once, as it’s picked up the most Academy Award nominations so far with 11 nods.
Everything Everywhere All at Once is available to stream on Paramount Plus, Apple TV and Prime Video.
The Fabelmans
Gabriel LaBelle stars as Sammy Fabelman in The Fabelmans (Picture: Merie Weismiller Wallace/Amblin)
Co-written, produced, and directed by Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans is semi-autobiographical and, fittingly, an ode to cinema.
This is not to be missed for the real film buffs out there.
The Fabelmans is available to rent or buy on Prime Video and Apple TV.
Tár
Cate Blanchett stars as Lydia Tár in this brutal drama (Picture: Florian Hoffmeister)
Cate Blanchett caused quite the stir when this film came out, portraying a stern female conductor, who is to be frank, a bit of a bully.
It was called ‘anti-women’ by some, but was critically acclaimed by many – including, apparently the Oscars.
Tár is available to rent on Amazon and AppleTV+.
Top Gun: Maverick
Tom Cruise gave his all in the remake of aviation classic Top Gun (Picture: AP)
Revived from its humble yet uber-successful 1986 beginnings, the new Top Gun: Maverick knocked the socks off fans last year.
‘Show me the way home, honey’, because we’re all going to watch it immediately now its been nominated for an Oscar (if we haven’t already).
Top Gun: Maverick is available to stream on Now, Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video.
Triangle of Sadness
Charlbi Dean Kriek and Harris Dickinson star in Triangle of Sadness (Picture: Neon via AP)
January 24 was a triangle of happiness for the cast of this Titanic-esque satirical dark comedy about a cruise ship that, you guessed it, sinks.
Triangle of Sadness is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video.
Women Talking
Judith Ivey and Claire Foy star in Women Talking (Picture: AP)
Who knows whether Claire Foy and the team behind Women Talking will take home the crown for their harrowing film about a religious colony devastated by a series of sexual assaults?
Women Talking isn’t streaming in the UK yet.
When are the Oscars 2023?
The Oscars 2023 will take place on March 12 in California, LA, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

The awards ceremony will be televised live on the US channel ABC – at 5pm Pacific Time (PT), which is 1am in the UK.
In the UK, previous years have seen the ceremony broadcast on the Sky Cinema Oscars channel, via Sky or streaming service NOW – but it’s still TBC on if this is the case for 2023’s show.
