Manchester United’s pursuit of Frenkie de Jong was one of the transfer sagas of last summer and it might not be over just yet, with the Red Devils still interested in the Barcelona midfielder.
The Red Devils were pursuing the Dutchman for much of the pre-season transfer window, with the club wanting to make him one of Erik ten Hag’s first major signings as manager.
It was reported that United agreed a fee of €75million (£63m) with Barcelona for the midfielder, but failed to convince him to make the switch to the Premier League.
The 25-year-old has been a regular in the first team this season under Xavi, making 21 La Liga appearances so far as Barca sit top of the table.
However, Manchester United are not giving up the ghost and will try their luck in trying to sign the Netherlands international again this summer, according to Spanish publication Sport.
The report states that United are seeking two big names signings this summer and De Jong is still on their shopping list, alongside the likes of Victor Osimhen, Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham.
However, they also state that any deal for De Jong looks extremely difficult to do, after he showed last year that he was not in any rush to move to Manchester and he has been a big part of Xavi’s plans at the Camp Nou.
De Jong started both legs of the Europa League tie between United and Barca in February, which the English side came out on top of thanks to a draw in Spain and a narrow win at Old Trafford.
Speaking on the evening of the second leg, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes backed another move for the Dutchman, who he rates highly.
‘Yeah of course,’ Scholes told BT Sport about United moving again for the Dutchman. ‘He is wonderful footballer.’
