Jane McDonald, official queen of cruise ships and our hearts, has had to clear up that she’s not actually landed a job in the government (although she probably deserves it at this point).
The presenter, singer, and general icon set the record straight after a joke image circulating social media declared: ‘The Rt Hon Jane McDonald MP appointed Secretary of State For Cruise Ships and Entertainment.’
After an outpouring of congratulations, Jane – who’s also not an MP for anyone still confused – confirmed she’s not actually landed a job as a member of the Cabinet (at least not yet).
‘This is hilarious! A number of people have got in touch to congratulate me on this – just to confirm that it isn’t real. Someone put it on social media as a joke!’ Jane, 59, said.
At least if anyone’s ever in the market for a Secretary of State for Cruise Ships and Entertainment, they know exactly who to call.
For anyone not in the know, Jane started her career as a singer on cruise ships and it was a love affair that would continue for decades to come.
She rose to fame following her appearance on BBC2 show The Cruise, and, in 2017, she landed her own show, Cruising With Jane McDonald, which has had eight series and earned her a Bafta.
In 2018, she also released her album Cruising With Jane McDonald, following up with the second volume in 2020.
Jane’s almost-appointment comes after new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak assembled his Cabinet, after he succeeded Liz Truss this week.
Safe to say, plenty of stars have been left unimpressed with the government as of late, with many speaking out following Ms Truss’ resignation.
Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid tweeted: ‘The U-turn Prime Minister. Yesterday: I’m a fighter not a quitter. Today: quits.’

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker wrote: ‘Another Prime Minister resigns. Would you fracking believe it?’
John Bishop was particularly incensed by the developments and said: ‘WTF !!! And they think they can just get another Tory in !!! Unacceptable.’
The announcement was triggering for Richard Osman who quipped: ‘No-one used to resign until I resigned from ‘Pointless’. Now they’re all at it. I think I made it cool.’
Love Island narrator Iain Stirling couldn’t resist cracking a joke about the PM’s short tenure and quipped: ‘Liz Truss’s reign as Prime Minster was shorter than a series of Love Island.’
Nish Kumar laughed in similar fashion: ‘Even Quibi lasted longer than her.’
Sue Perkins weighed in: ‘Still not sorry. In fact, she’s laughing. There is no mandate for any of this.’
