New PM Rishi Sunak urged to overhaul cabinet
New UK prime minister Rishi Sunak is being urged to overhaul the cabinet on his first day in the top job.
Current foreign secretary James Cleverly told Sky News that Sunak’s government should feature the best ministers available – rather than focusing on loyal ministers.
At present, Sunak’s team haven’t mentioned potential reshuffles, but it’s widely expected that Jeremy Hunt will keep his job as Chancellor.
Rishi Sunak became the Conservative Party leader yesterday, and after being officially appointed by King Charles this morning, he will become the country’s newest PM.
He is set to make a public address in front of Number 10 before lunchtime.
Outgoing PM Liz Truss – who only was on the job for 44 days before announcing her resignation – will hold one final cabinet before heading to the palace to resign.
Reports suggest he is planning to build a cabinet that features people from across the Conservative spectrum.
Dominic Rabb, Mel Stride, Oliver Dowden and Mark Harper are tipped for jobs in the cabinet.
