Alexandra Burke breaks down in tears as she explains emotional reason for not revealing baby’s name and gender

Alexandra Burke broke down in tears on Loose Women as she opened up on the reason she hasn’t revealed her baby’s name and gender.

The former X Factor star, who won the singing competition in 2008, gave birth to her first child in June with West Ham footballer Darren Randolph and she explained how her fame after winning the talent show influenced her decision since becoming a mother.

Asked about her approach on Monday’s episode of the ITV daytime show, she composed herself and said: ‘I’ve never really spoken about this. Obviously, I come from X Factor and that’s a public show. I’m very grateful for the platform that’s made me who I am today.

‘In the process – I hate getting emotional talking about this. In the process of me being who I am – I asked for all this but my family never.’

She started crying as panellists Ruth Langsford, Janet Street Porter, Jane Moore and Katie Piper offered support and reassured her she didn’t need to talk about it.

However, she added: ‘It just… The impact on them is hard.’

She noted how her decision to appear on the programme was her own, while her family and friends – whose privacy was also impacted by her rise to fame – didn’t have make the same choice.

‘I wanna protect the baby as much as I can and let the baby make its own decision,’ she said. ‘I don’t wanna hurt anyone in the process of who I am and the life that I’ve chosen.’

Earlier in the interview, Alexandra admitted her whole ‘life has changed’ since becoming a mum, as she joked about a lack of sleep while gushing over the way she is more ‘content’ than ever before.

‘Oh gosh, life has changed! Everything’s changed. Sleep is a thing of the past, but change in such a brilliant way. I’ve never felt so content in my life, I’ve never known love like this before,’ she beamed.

‘I’m just the happiest I’ve ever been. It makes me really emotional because my mum always used to say to me, “You’ll never know unconditional love until you have a baby”.

‘Well, my goodness, it’s overwhelming. I don’t know how to explain it to people… It’s the greatest gift of all.’

Reflecting on her late mother, Alexandra added that she thinks her mum would be ‘proud’ of her, and being a parent herself has put things ‘into perspective’.

‘I think she’d be really proud, my goodness, she always wanted to see me have kids,’ she said. ‘I’m just doing everything in my power to make my family proud.’

She added: ‘What they went through, what they sacrificed for you to have your education, clothes on your back, food on the table… Things get put into perspective.’

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
