US midterms 2022: Charlie Crist to challenge Republican Ron DeSantis 

Charlie Crist will take on Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis in the US midterm elections. 

Democratic voters picked Crist over Nikki Fried in the last big election before the November vote. 

Democrats will be hoping to beat DeSantis amid expectations he will run for the White House in 2024. 

Voters in New York and Oklahoma also picked candidates on Tuesday. 

What are midterms?

The US midterms will determine control of Congress for the final two years of Democratic President Joe Biden’s term. 

According to polls, Mr Crist is only a few percentage points behind DeSantis in Florida – a crucial swing state in presidential elections. 

Mr Crist was a Republican who switched parties in 2012. 

DeSantis has become one of the most admired governors in the Republican party and is seen as Trump’s natural successor. His anti-mask and vaccine stance and his beliefs on abortion amongst many other Trump-inspired attitudes make him the most likely to lead the Republican party.
