Sunday Papers – Strike chaos will lead to wave of economic unrest

The Sunday Paper’s front pages feature a variety of stories. Many of the papers lead with the impending walk-out of 40,000 rail workers in strikes next week. Whilst the front page is being shared with the latest UK political news, the ongoing war in Ukraine, World Cup and celebrity news and a picture of Prince William and his children – marking father’s day in the UK.

    ………………….

The Mail on Sunday – Starmer does support the rail strikes

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer supports this summer’s threatened rail strikes despite earlier saying “nobody wants the strikes”, says The Mail on Sunday.

The paper says leaked minutes from a meeting support the claims. In it Starmer says he opposed government moves to restrict industrial action by the Aslef train drivers’ union.

The Sunday Times – Steel yourself a long war, PM warns West

According to The Sunday Times, Boris Johnson has called on the UK’s allies to “hold their nerve” and prepare for a long war in Ukraine. The PM has written in the paper saying Ukraine has the “strategic endurance to survive and eventually prevail” or face the risk of the “greatest victory for aggression in Europe since the Second World War.”

The paper also reports the apparent end of ticket offices at railway stations with all sales moving online.

The Sunday Telegraph – Unions ‘bribing’ workers to strike

Unions are “bribing” people to strike, says Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng.

The Sunday Telegraph reports the cabinet minister claims the biggest unions have been amassing a “war chest” to help persuade workers to unleash a “summer of chaos” through strikes – it is reported anyone who takes part in industrial action will see their daily payments double.

The paper says the tax-free payments are being offered by several unions threatening strikes this summer but the unions say the money is needed to compensate workers who lose pay when they take industrial action.

Sunday People – Justice at last for James

Denise Fergus, the mother of James Bulger, has won a historic victory after it was confirmed a debate about an inquiry into his murder will take place.

She has been campaigning for this since her then two-year-old was snatched and killed by two ten-year-olds in 1993.

Daily Star on Sunday – He shoots, he scores he’s jailed

Footy fans are being warned about their behaviour ahead of the World Cup in Qatar in November.

The Daily Star on Sunday says anyone caught having sex outside marriage while at the tournament will be jailed, as strict rules will not be relaxed for visiting fans.

Sunday Express – it’s time to take control of our borders

Immigration is the front page topic for the Sunday Express, which also highlights the Duchess of Cornwall’s appearance in British Vogue.

The paper quotes Attorney General Suella Braveman saying the British people rather than European judges must “decide who can and cannot stay in our country.” The comment is in an apparent reference to the ECHR grounding the first Rwanda flight last Tuesday.

Sunday Mirror – Dame Kelly: I’m finally free to be me

Olympic athlete Dame Kelly Holmes has come out, telling the Sunday Mirror she has hidden being gay for 34 years.

Dame Kelly, 52, tells the paper that she has been through dark times and lived a secret life for decades, but decided to come out in Pride month after a brush with Covid made her realise she wanted to show the world her real self.

The Observer – New strike chaos as teachers and NHS staff warn of action on pay

A wave of “1970s-style economic unrest” is about to hit Britain, as teachers and NHS staff threaten action over pay – on top of the already-announced rail strikes, says the Observer. The National Education Union told the paper that unless it received a pay offer much closer to inflation, it would plan to ballot its 450,000 members.

The paper also highlights the success of columnist Carole Cadwalladr in the libel action multimillionaire Brexit-backer Arron Banks made against her.
