Boris Johnson’s Partygate apology was made for TV, but the public may be sick of repeats

Boris Johnson’s Partygate apology was made for TV, but the public may be sick of repeats

The i says after he admitted to Parliament that he had broken the Covid lockdown laws he created, Boris Johnson apologised “unreservedly”, “profusely” and “wholeheartedly”.

But the key was that we had heard it all before, even if he tried to make a virtue of it. “I repeat my apology”, he said. “I renew my apology,” he said. “I reiterate my apology,” he said. As much made-for-TV as made for his nervous backbenchers, the duplication of apologies seemed endless.

For a man who has made his name from joyously not sticking to the rules, he stuck religiously to the script he had set out previously. Referring to the fine he received for his birthday meeting, the PM repeated that it didn’t “occur to me then or subsequently that a gathering in the Cabinet room could be a breach of the rules”.
