The Observer – Fury greets PM’s claims that Ukraine fight is like Brexit
The Observer leads with the fury from political leaders in the UK and in Europe after the PM compared the invasion of Ukraine to Brexit. At a Tory conference on Saturday, the PM said the world faces a moment of choice “between freedom and oppression”, before making his comments about Brexit.
The paper says the PM’s remarks “caused astonishment” as it suggests the EU is a form of tyranny.
The front splash features an image of a Ukrainian man in hospital after being shot in the thig by Russian soldiers – he survived seven days without medical care.
The Sunday Times – Ukraine battle is like Brexit, PM tells party
The prime minister’s comments are the leads for the Sunday Times. Tory MP Tobias Ellwood, chair of the defence select committee, tweeted: “If we are to ultimately defeat Putin we require international leadership and unity. Comparing the Ukrainian people’s fight against Putin’s tyranny to the British people voting for Brexit damages the standard of statecraft we were beginning to exhibit.”
Donald Tusk, former president of the European Council, said the PM’s words “offend Ukrainians, the British and common sense”.
Sunday Express – Now Putin unleashes ‘invincible missile’
The Sunday Express leads with the war in Ukraine, saying Moscow launched a hypersonic missile – capable of carrying nuclear warheads – at Ukraine for the first time.
The missile destroyed a weapons storage site in the west of Ukraine on Friday, the Kremlin confirmed. The paper adds that the UK MoD said Putin has changed tack in Ukraine to now “pursue a strategy of attrition” after failing to capture a major city.
Sunday Mirror – Putin’s war on Ukraine: ‘he can’t kill our dreams’
An image of three smiling Ukrainian children makes the front page of the Sunday Mirror. “He can’t kill our dreams” the headline reads of the children aged three, four and six who are now refugees. The paper says the kids, have spoken of their “innocent dreams” as the Kremlin launched missiles across their homeland.
The Sunday Telegraph – PM ‘frustrated’ with Sunak over nuclear
The Sunday Telegraph’s front page is dominated by a picture of a Ukrainian soldier being carried from the debris of a military school hit by Russian rockets.
The paper’s lead story, however, is that the prime minister is “privately frustrated” with Chancellor Rishi Sunak. The paper claims the PM and Sunak have different approaches to nuclear power, with Sunak reportedly reluctant to increase the number of new reactors in Britain. But the PM is understood to believe a “dash for nuclear” is needed to shore up the country’s energy supplies, according to the paper.
Chancellors Wednesday’s Spring Statement
The Mail on Sunday says Rishi Sunak has given the “strongest hint yet” that he could cut fuel duty and income tax.
In an interview with the Mail, Mr Sunak says his “priority over the rest of this Parliament is to cut people’s taxes”.
The Sun on Sunday says Treasury sources are indicating that tax thresholds may be lifted.
And the Sunday Times suggests Mr Sunak is preparing a “giveaway” to convince voters that he is “on their side”.
The Observer predicts an increase in the £150 rebate on council tax bills for lower value homes in England.
The shadow chancellor, Rachel Reeves, tells the paper she supports such moves, while calling for benefits to rise by 6%.
In his interview with the Mail, Mr Sunak also speaks of his enthusiasm for lifting the ban on fracking.
