Empire’s Jussie Smollett released from jail after ‘not eating’ during six nights behind bars for hoax racist attack
The Metro says Jussie Smollett has been released from jail on a bond while he prepares to appeal his conviction on five felony counts of lying to police about a racist and homophobic attack.
The former Empire actor, 39, had been sentenced to 150 days in jail for falsely claiming he was the victim of a hate crime in 2019.
However, he was released after six nights on a personal recognisance bond of $150,000 (£114,000), meaning he did not have to put down money but agreed to come to court as required.
Smollett’s defence attorney Nenye Uche told reporters outside Cook County Jail that Smollett’s family is ‘very very happy with today’s developments’, but revealed that the former actor had survived only on ice water during his time in prison.
