Matt Hancock talks breaking Covid rules and affair – ‘I fell in love’
Former health secretary Matt Hancock has said he broke the Covid guidance rules because he ‘fell in love’. Hancock was caught on CCTV kissing his former aide Gina Coladangelo – he subsequently quit his government role and left his marriage of 15-years.
CCTV images were published by the Sun of Hancock and Coladangelo kissing inside the Department of Health last summer – at the height of the Covid pandemic. The shocking scandal led to backlash and outrage from the public who were following strict Covid guidelines.
In a new tell-all interview with The Diary of a CEO podcast, Matt Hancock has now said he “fell in love with somebody” and it “all happened very quickly” but he insists he did not break government laws – but did break social distancing guidelines, the same guidelines he helped to create.
He said: “I resigned because I broke the social distancing guidelines.
“By then, they weren’t actually rules, they weren’t the law. But that’s not the point.
“The point is they were the guidelines that I’d been proposing. That happened because I fell in love with somebody.”
Hancock told the podcast, he has known Gina Coladangelo “for more than half [his] life”, and was brought in to help with public communications.
“We spent a lot of time together, ironically trying to get me to be able to communicate in a more emotionally intelligent way, and we fell in love,” he said.
“That’s something that was completely outside of my control and I of course regret the pain that that’s caused and the very, very, very public nature … but I fell in love with someone.
“It actually happened after the rules were lifted, but the guidance was still in place.
“I hold no bitterness about this because I broke the rules, I ‘fess up. I broke the guidance.”
Hancock stressed that the relationship between the two was not “casual sex.”
“That’s something that was completely outside of my control and I of course regret the pain that that’s caused and the very, very, very public nature … but I fell in love with someone.
It came after the podcast host asked Hancock about Covid rules during the height of the pandemic which prevented couples in different households from kissing, holding hands or any type of touching.
Hancock was visibly uncomfortable and asked the host to start the line of questioning again but without the reference to causal sex. “I haven’t had casual sex with anybody,” he said. “I fell in love with somebody.”
