Britain’s Cameron Norrie wins Indian Wells title
Britain’s Cameron Norrie has become the first Brit to win the Indian Wells title, as he fought back from a set and a break down to beat Nikoloz Basilashvili.
Norrie, 26, won 3-6 6-4 6-1 against the Georgian to seal one of the biggest titles in tennis.
“I’m so happy, I can’t even describe it,” he said on court.
Thanks to his historic win in California, Norrie is now the British number one and he is in the running to reach the elite season-ending ATP Finals.
Norrie will now rise to a world ranking of 15, a massive leap from his ranking of 74th in the world at the beginning of the year. Cameron Norrie has had an extraordinary season where he has reached six finals and won 47 matches.
“I can’t really believe it. If you’d have told me I’d have won before the tournament started I wouldn’t have believed you, so it’s amazing,” said Norrie, who is the first British player to reach the final at one of the elite Masters 1,000 events since Andy Murray won in Paris in 2016.
Back the Brits
Cameron Norrie’s incredible win comes just a month after 18-year-old British tennis star Emma Raducanu shocked the world by winning the US Open as a qualifier and without dropping a single set.
There has been a wonderful resurgence in grassroots tennis across the UK since Raducanu’s win and now Norrie’s historic win is set to add to the rising interest.
So…… At the beginning of September I am not sure any British tennis fans would have believed
