Tom Daley wins emotional Tokyo 2020 diving gold medal 13 years after Olympic debut
The i says Tom Daley and Matty Lee beat defending Olympic champions China to earn a dramatic gold medal in the diving pool on the first Monday of Tokyo 2020 by just one point.
Team GB had already enjoyed success in the water after Adam Peaty cruised to 100m breaststroke gold but he is a veteran of the top step of the podium, while Daley has only ever enjoyed bronze, having finished third at London 2012 in the individual and then at Rio 2016 in the synchronised event.
It was Daniel Goodfellow next to him in Brazil five years ago but in 2018 he partnered with Matty Lee, against whom he has been diving since his early years in the sport, and they won last year’s European title as well as World Cup gold at the Olympic test event in Japan.
