THE BIG MATCH
ENG V SCOT
Wembley Stadium
PREDICTION
The contrasting performances in the opening games for both teams suggest a strong performance by England. Scotland was unable to use the chances they were given in their opening game, which once again could prove fatal, especially considering Southgate’s wealth of attacking options.
This is the first tournament Scotland has qualified for since the 1998 World Cup and they will be desperate to get back on track after their first game stumble.
England are going in with a team full of quality players and are on home turf at Wembley, leading our prediction to be a 2-0 win for England.
Predicted score
England 2 Scotland 0
ENGLAND-SCOTLAND | Team News, Where To Watch
Tonight’s Euro 2020 match will see England and Scotland face each other in their second Group D fixture.
England began their campaign beating Croatia, whilst Scotland lost to the Czech Republic.
Tonight’s game at Wembley Stadium is the first time since 2017 England and oldest international rival Scotland will meet. The 2017 game ended in a 2-2 draw. But England’s win last week will have boosted their confidence for tonight’s match, whilst Scotland will undoubtedly be knocked from their many squandered chances against the Czechs.
If England wins tonight, it virtually seals their path to the knockout stages.
England v Scotland is the oldest international rivalry in the world. The two teams first met in 1872 in what Fifa has recognised as the first international football match in history.
Adding to the emotion is this week’s 25th anniversary of the famous Euro 96 clash between the two countries.
TEAM NEWS
ENGLAND
England defender Harry Maguire has said he is “fit and fresh” and ready to face Scotland, and Gareth Southgate has confirmed Maguire will be involved in the match but is undecided over whether he will start the centre-back.
Southgate appears to favour keeping the back-four that played in the 1-0 win over Croatia in the opening group game.
“Harry will be involved tomorrow,” said Southgate at a news conference on Thursday. “The decision we’ve got to make is whether he is ready to start, but we’re really pleased with his progress.
“He’s trained with the team for four or five days now and had no reaction. Of course each session he’s involved with he gets more confident. I think he’s on a really good path.
“Of course we want everybody available. It causes difficult decisions, but at the moment, this morning on the training pitch we had 26 players training and that’s a great situation for us to be in.”
SCOTLAND
Scotland midfielder John McGinn said the team aim to write another glorious chapter in the 149-year-old rivalry.
Responding to the Wembley showdown is a cup final for the Scots, he said: “It might be the cup final for the supporters but it’s important for us to use the knowledge of what it means to the country and the supporters and use our heads at the same time – be cool, composed and bring our strengths to the game.
“But we don’t want to take all the passion out of the game because that’s what makes Scotland a force in these games.
“When I looked at the record of Scotland and England I was surprised how tight the results were. The English media would have you believe that the gap is humongous, so it’s up to us on Friday to prove that wrong.”
