Most Covid rules will remain in place in England for at least another four weeks after the planned 21 June date, government sources told the BBC.
It could mean capacity limits for sports, pubs and cinemas remain and clubs would stay closed.
The 4-week extension to lockdown will be put to a Commons vote this month and could trigger a Tory backbench rebellion.
England was set to move to stage four of the government’s roadmap out of lockdown on 21 June. But scientists are calling for a delay over the sharp rise in Delta variant cases.
A delay in reopening would allow more work to be done on whether vaccines are breaking or simply weakening the link between infections and hospitalisations.
