90s rock band frontman in bitter feud as he slams ‘cowardly’ ex-bandmates

Huey Morgan, former frontman of Fun Lovin’ Criminals, launched a brutal online takedown of his ex-bandmates in an ongoing feud.

The 90s US rock band – currently formed of Brian ‘Fast’ Leiser, Frank Benbini, Naim Cortazzi – is best known for their hit 1996 song Scooby Snacks, as well as top 10 albums Come Find Yourself, 100% Colombian, and Loco.

Morgan helmed the band since its creation in 1993 – alongside Leiser and Steve Borgovini – until his shock departure in 2021.

After this he has regularly voiced his anger and displeasure at his fellow musicians who have continued to tour.

In a recent post on X, he claimed: ‘Yes it’s true, [Fun Lovin’ Criminals] did indeed trademark and copyright the band name behind my back while I was still in the band and that is some cowardly disloyal s**t…’

The 56-year-old singer and media personality, who is currently performing solo shows in the UK, was supported by fans in the comments who called him the ‘one and only fun lovin’ criminal, then, now, and forever.’

And many agreed that the band appeared as ‘imposters’ and ‘fake’.

In response to one fan’s comment, he alleged: ‘I had heard that [Leiser] and [Benbini] had been bad mouthing me to fans, but too chicken to say anything to my face. Such bad humans, but you know that firsthand.’

Fun Lovin’ Criminals has not responded to Morgan’s most recent attack on social media. But it is not the first time he is publicly criticised the group.

In November 2023, in a since deleted post, he once more accused the band of being a ‘corny tribute act’, called the 100% Colombian anniversary album tour ‘a fraud’ and claimed the band had ‘threatened him with some legal bulls**t’ if he spoke up.

On a separate occasion he also claimed he has been ‘blocked’ by the band. Another time he said they tried to ‘pull a fast one on him’, per the Sun.

The Clash also reported that he called their continued touring ‘sad and creepy’.

Morgan exited the band in 2021, with Fun Lovin’ Criminals releasing a neutral statement breaking the news.

‘Huey has officially confirmed his departure from the band. We wish him all the best with his endeavours.

‘We will continue as Fun Lovin’ Criminals because of the love and dedication we have for our music and our fans. More details to follow,’ the statement read at the time.

In a 2023 interview, Leiser addressed the ‘naysayers’ who say the band is not the same without Morgan.

‘Come to the show. Every story has two sides. We don’t air our dirty laundry out in public, that’s for damn sure,’ he told the publication.

He reiterated it was ‘all about the fans’ and the band still ‘has a lot of life in it’.

Then added: ‘But you know, we’re just here to have a good time playing music, forget about our problems. So obviously, our personal problems are in our band problems, whatever. That’s for us to deal with, you know, yeah.’

A timeline of Huey Morgan’s feud with Fun Lovin’ Criminals

Fun Lovin’ Criminals has been active for over three decades.

1993: Huey Morgan founded Fun Lovin’ Criminals alongside Brian Leiser and Steve Borgovini

1996: Fun Lovin’ Criminals released its biggest hit, Scooby Snacks

2021: Morgan quits Fun Lovin’ Criminals and the band release a statement confirming they will continue touring due to their ‘love and dedication’ to the fans and music.

2023: In November 2023, as Fun Lovin’ Criminals embark on a 25 year anniversary tour for hit album 100% Colombian. Morgan attacks the band on social media, calling them a ‘fraud’ and ‘tribute act’.

2023: Leiser and Benbini do an interview in which Leiser confirms they will not ‘air dirty laundry’ and that ‘every story has two sides’.

2024: Morgan launches another attack on social media calling the band members ‘disloyal and cowardly’ and claiming they artists have bad-mouthed him.

Some more light on the situation may be shed in Benbini’s new documentary about his life, To Be Frank, as confirmed by LeicesterLive.

The Leicester-born musician said: ‘The film is about a young kid from a council estate who took some chances and turned his life around to pave a way in rock and roll.

‘It’s about growing up in the eighties in a separated family and how my love for music developed, getting into the drums at an early age and discovering the music of my idol, Prince.’

It will also address Morgan’s controversial departure and the not-so glamorous side of being a touring musician.

Fun Lovin’ Criminals is far from the only band currently feuding. Earlier this month, Sex Pistols’ guitarist Steve Jones opened up about his estranged relationship with former bandmate Johnny Rotten.

And in July, Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac spoke about his hopes of reconciliation between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham.

Metro has reached out to Huey Morgan and Fun Lovin’ Criminals’ representatives for comment.
